One excuse justifies his immediate killing, the other discredits him. So why would he be killed unarmed on the spot?James Gundunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16141055666432969361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1571201204115952544.post-11468966742440235082011-05-03T17:24:58.314-07:002011-05-03T17:24:58.314-07:00Public celebrations and congratulations can be nul...Public celebrations and congratulations can be nullified by a sound U.S. response. Just like 9/11, Obama will make or break bin Laden's death in the coming months: in Bahrain and Yemen, with the Israelis and Palestinians, in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Unfortunately Obama's trend began before bin Laden's death, so why he would change now remains ambiguous.

The U.S. story is full of plot holes to be sure, but the ratio between misreporting, disinformation and secrecy is probably equal. We could spend the rest of our lives questioning whether bin Laden was already dead. I've read through countless reports and don't have any conclusion to make.

However we do sympathize with all theories relating to bin Laden's usefulness - in life and death. There are ...Very comprehensive take as ever, James. There are so many points to make it is hard to focus on the main ones. The ramifications of the interface with the Arab Spring is key as you point out. Not an Allahu Akhbar to be heard so far in those countries. But that could change very rapidly and will IMHO. The smug triumphalism and self-congratulation of the US appartatchiks, media and politicos is a microcosm of their disconnect with wider realities. This is not playing well with the Muslim world to judge by a quick look at the international press this morning. The invasion of a foreign sovereignty to commit a political murder, the predictable spin about the death scene (hiding behind women etc.) and the cultural crassness of the aftermath are PR disasters for the US in many eyes outside the US. A prominent churchman in the UK said on BBC radio this morning he could not watch the celebrations in Washington because he was so disgusted by them. This is a view which is growing in Europe, never mind the ME as far as I can see.TONY @oakroydhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08304486783392151133noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1571201204115952544.post-20890970073693766212011-05-02T19:06:47.086-07:002011-05-02T19:06:47.086-07:00Spot on. Today could have been truly special.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
